About Homocysteine

Homocysteine is an amino acid linked to cardiovascular disease and vitamin B deficiencies.

The reasons for low HCY

Low homocysteine is uncommon and generally not a health concern, but may indicate excessive vitamin B supplementation. Maintaining a balanced intake of folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 can help regulate levels.

The reasons for elevated HCY

High homocysteine is linked to cardiovascular disease, blood clots, and neurological conditions. Lowering homocysteine involves consuming more folate (leafy greens, beans), vitamin B12 (meat, eggs, dairy), and vitamin B6 (bananas, nuts, potatoes).

Is it bad too have too high/low HCY?

Low homocysteine typically does not cause health problems unless associated with an underlying deficiency in protein metabolism.

High homocysteine can contribute to arterial plaque buildup, increasing the risk of stroke, heart disease, and cognitive decline.
